Your First 90 Days in a New Job

Getting the job is the start. The first 90 days are when your manager decides whether you are someone they can rely on.

Days 1 to 30: learn

  • Understand what success looks like: ask your manager "What should I have achieved by the end of my first three months?"
  • Learn the tools, the main processes and who does what.
  • Write everything down so you ask each question only once.

Days 31 to 60: contribute

Take on small tasks fully and finish them on time. Share progress before you are asked. When you make a mistake, say so early and explain how you will fix it.

Days 61 to 90: show results

Pick one thing you can improve, such as a report, a checklist or a repeated manual task, and improve it with your manager's agreement. Small, visible improvements build trust quickly.

Habits that help

  • A short weekly update to your manager: done, in progress, blocked
  • Asking for feedback every few weeks, not only at review time
  • Being on time and responsive; reliability matters more than brilliance early on

Keep your CV updated

Note your tasks and results as you go. When your next opportunity comes, you will have real bullets ready instead of trying to remember what you did.
